National Geographic Your Shot Oscar-winning actor Sean Penn is no stranger to National Geographic. He is a photographer, videographer, and film producer, and has been an Explorer in Residence for the National Geographic Channel. The son of Hollywood legend, director Roman Polanski and the brother of Dylan, he was born Sean Penn McCarthy in Ohio in 1963. He started working as a union stage hand and furniture mover when he was just 17 years old. He moved to New York at 20, when he began acting in off-Broadway productions, including Tommy and The Misfits. His breakthrough performance came in 1986 when he starred as John Lennon in Neil Jordan’s trilogy “My Left Foot.” During the next decade he portrayed John Lennon in the biopic “Two Left Feet” and as Lennon’s neighbor Maureen Cox in “Irene.” In 1996 he moved from film to the silver screen, where he starred in The Hunted. His international roles include Oliver Stone’s "Natural Born Killers" and “The Assassination of Jesse James By the Coward Robert Ford.” In 1999 he was nominated for an Academy Award for “Milk.” The year 2005 was a big year for Penn, as he won the Best Actor Oscar for his role in “Mystic River.” Penn has been honored with many awards and recognitions for his work, including a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2000 and the Spirit of Life award in 2010. In 2011 he wrote a memoir called “I’m a Stranger Here Myself,” which was released on November 9, 2011 by Random House. He has also been the face of several National Geographic campaigns, including the NAT GEO AMY AMBASSADORS project.
